New Year Resolution

I read somewhere that 50% of us make some kind of New Year resolution. Of that 50% only 11% actually stick to the resolution. So on the one hand there is this well intended effort at bettering ones self that slams right in the face of reality. Our options? Well we can pretend that we are really going to pull it off against all odds or we can cynically renounce all such resolution making all together and hence never becoming that “better person” we want to be.

Joe Carter actually comes up with a third option in Don’t Just Make A Resolution – Make A Habit.

“Happy New Year”

What do we mean when we wish everyone a Happy New Year!  Part of it is just cultural pleasantries we offer at this time of the year, but there has to be more involved in that phrase.  There is the desire to bring hope to those we are giving this pronouncement.   As we have observed before, the beginning of another year is the adult version of a do over.  It’s a mulligan in life and hope springs eternal when a new calendar rolls around.  It was not the beginning of a new year when Jesus uttered his final “I AM” statement, declaring that He was the vine and we are the branches, but the disciples were on the brink of a new era in their relationship with Jesus.  Soon enough there would be a new beginning, unlike any that they could imagine.  In preparation of that new beginning, Jesus wanted to make sure that they would remain in Him.  He has the same desire for us today.  As we begin a new year at Mag this Sunday, are we truly abiding in Him?  Let’s talk more about all of this when we get together this Sunday.

Church Planting Movements (CPM) in America:

with Jim Graham

Jim Graham serves with the International Mission Board (IMB) in Taiwan. He is currently stateside and serving at CBU. Jim was personally mentored for 6 months by Ying Kai, another IMB fieldworker who followed the instructions Jesus gave his disciples in Luke 10, and saw the Lord bring about CPM in China. In nine years and nine months that movement produced 1,738,143 Baptisms and 158,993 New Small Churches. The Lord only knows the impact that this work is having still today.

We will look at CPM in America and how asking the question, “What Did Jesus Do?” instead of “What Would Jesus Do?” is bearing fruit for the Kingdom of God in the United States.
